Follow clues to guess the Mandarin word in this Mandarin game of improv, learning and laughs. Some clues are taboo to challenge your Mandarin listening comprehension and get your mind’s gears turning in Mandarin to guess the word in question.
WHAT’S A MANDABOO?
It’s a guessing challenge where the speaker gives you clues but they are not allowed to say certain taboo words to keep you guessing longer. You’ll hang on every clue until you make a Mandarin breakthrough…or bust! Will you be stumped? Only one way to know!
ARE YOU UP FOR THE GUESSING CHALLENGE?
Play on your own with the built-in Mandaboos or play with friends by creating your own Mandaboos for friends to guess, or try your guessing prowess with your friends’ Mandaboos and keep the learning going.
HOW DO YOU PLAY?
You can change the Mandarin from simplified to traditional in the settings and then click on any thumbnail on the homescreen to start listening to the boos.
The ‘boos’ (videos) are whatever the levels of the person speaking. It could be beginner Mandarin, it could be someone who is an intermediate learner or perhaps a native.
Inside each boo you can slect (with a toggle button) if you want to see the Pinyin for those words. You can also listen to the video any number of times. Then move on to the next boo.
Either way you will learn something new.
CREATING
You can also make your own boos. Making it possible to practice your spoken Mandarin as well using Mandaboo.
You can select a card which holds a title (the word you need to let people guess) and then a list of either helpful or words that will hinder you.
After you have recorded you can sleect whether or not you have used those words.
For every boo you make you get some Hongbao (points), for every boo you play you also get Hongbao. You get put on the scoreboard and can compete with other players to take over.
The game is suitable for all levels of Mandarin learner and can be enjoyed by everyone.
THE JOURNEY SO FAR...
It has been a two year journey to get here.
It took two years, two different coding languages, two different spoken languages, four variations of writen languages, 6 Mandarin teachers, front end and back end developers, hundreds of hours and relentless planning.
And this is only version 1! The first working version of the Mandaboo app. We intend to make it better with every update.
Mandaboo is an appyfied version of a game we play in our Mandarin Monkey Hangouts. Where the speaker will describe a noun, unable to use certain words during there clues. This leaves the other player guessing, which is where the fun ensues.
The speaker gets to practice their Mandarin by finding new ways to say certain sentences and the listeners gets to practise listening while trying to make sense of it all.

Learning how to make an app has always been something we have wanted to do and we continue to improve with every iteration.
